Description
Chaplain Samuel H. Merrill of Portland was commissioned an officer in Company S, District of Columbia 1st Cavalry Regiment, made up primarily of men from Maine.
On August 27, 1864, he was mustered out of that unit and mustered into Company S, Maine 1st Cavalry Regiment on 27 Aug 1864.
He was mustered out of the army on August 1, 1865 at Petersburg, Virginia.
