Description
Charles Hartwell Burr (b. 1824) was a homeopathic physician and a member of the Fraternity Club of Portland. The goals of the club grew out of a movement for the institution of a Monday conference among ministers of the Unitarian, Universalist and Swedenborgian denominations.
Nicholas Biddle Kittell (1822-1894), who painted his portrait, was a landscape and portrait artist working primarily out of New York. In 1885 he occupied Harrison Bird Brown's Congress Street gallery in Portland while Brown was away "sketching."
