Description
Waterville's Purple Panthers won the New England youth basketball title in 1944.
Teddy Shiro, third from left in front row, was a leader of the team. The son of Celia and Louis Shiro, Ted was one of a number of Jewish youths in Maine who enjoyed athletic success.
Besides playing basketball, Shiro was an all-state football player in 1945 and Kennebec Valley Conference batting champion in baseball. He was named Top Teen-aged Athlete in the U.S. in 1945 by the Chicago Tribune.
Shiro attended Colby College where he played football, basketball and baseball. His teammate, John "Swisher" Mitchell (center, holding trophy aloft) was later basketball coach at Waterville High, and assistant basketball coach at Colby. The two players and their coach, Wally Donovan (far right), were all inducted in the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
