Description
Longtime Lubec physician Dr. Eben Homer Bennet (June 20, 1848-August 31, 1944) once delivered a paper at the age of 89 before the Washington County Medical Society, published in the Maine Medical Journal, July, 1937, as “The General Practitioners’ Responsibilities in Cases of Malignant Disease of the Sigmoid and Rectum.” After relating several case histories terminating in premature death, Bennet urges early diagnosis by physicians. “This creed places a heavy responsibility on the shoulders of general practitioners. It spells early diagnosis or death for the patient.” His admonition rings true even in 2011.
