Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

Left to right, rear, Dr. DaCosta F. Bennet, his father Dr. Eben Homer Bennet. In front, Dr. DaCosta Bennet’s sons Eben T., and Frank H. The site appears to be the rear door of Dr. Eben Bennet’s house at 18 Main Street, Lubec.

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt wrote, in her syndicated newspaper column “My Day” in September, 1944, on the death of Dr. Eben H. Bennet, that “Dr. D. F. Bennet has wonderful heritage, for respect and love followed his father all the days of his life. He cared for my husband’s mother (Sara Roosevelt) the last summer that she was at Campobello, and she had excellent care. If we are fortunate to reside again for any length of time on that beautiful island of Campobello, which I have always loved, I will look forward to renewing my acquaintance with Dr. D. F. Bennet and reminiscing about the virtues of his father.”
Mrs. Lois Sprague wrote, in October 2011, "My husband's two uncles, Bruce Bennet Sprague & Blair DeCosta Sprague, twins, were delivered by Dr DeCosta Bennet in Lubec on June 28, 1924. Evidently their mother and father, Fred & Annie Murphy Sprague, thought so much of Dr. DeCosta Bennet that they gave their twins his names!"
