Main Street, Lubec, 1906

Description

This view is looking southwest up the Main Street hill. On the left the second house was the long-time residence of Dr. Eben H. Bennet. Above the roof of the third and fourth houses may be seen the conically-roofed tower of the Bion Moses Pike Victorian-style mansion. On the right is the Mowry house, then the Masonic lodge. All these houses except the Mowry remain as of 2011.
The Masonic Hall was dedicated on September 27, 1855. According the the 1892 book “History of Washington Lodge No. 37” written by James McGregor, the building was 26 x 46 feet and cost $2,000. The Lubec Masons formalized their organization on January 10, 1822, meeting in Elijah Stearns’ Maine Hotel until 1839, then the “Clapp House” until 1855.
