Description
Elizabeth H. Sherman wrote to the Maine Agency Sanitary Commission in December 1863 about her husband, Bridges C. Sherman, who had been sick since the Battle of Gettysburg.
She wrote that he was now in the 2nd Battalion Invalid Corps. He believed he could get better if he had someone assist him, so she sought a discharge for him so she could care for him.
She wrote, "if you will assist him I think you will be doing a noble deed of charity besides you will have the humble prayers of his wife."
Sherman enlisted as a private in Co. D, 19th Maine Infantry on Aug. 25, 1862 when he was 28. He was transferred out of the regiment and into the U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on Feb. 15, 1864.
