Description
This mansard-roofed house, at 29 Main Street, was once the Doris Pike White (1896-1987) home. A daughter of Lubec’s Chester and Lottie (Avery) Pike, Doris White was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution from 1937 until her death, also serving as its national president. An investment banker with Pierce, White and Drummond in Bangor, she also served six years on the Maine Judicial Council.
The house passed into ownership of Judith P. Sulzberger (1923-2011) of the Ochs-Sulzberger family dynasty which secured controlling interest in the New York Times in 1896. Dr. Sulzberger, a physician, served on the Times Board of Directors from 1974 until 2000. Professionally a researcher in addition to clinical and private practice, she endowed the Judith P. Sulzberger Genome Center at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, her alma mater.
The house remains easily recognizable in 2011. The bay has been replaced by conventional windows, and the other ground floor front windows have been slightly re-arranged with elimination of the small secondary door. See also #68911.
