Description
These two postcards originated from the same black-and-white negative. The top photographic postcard fortunately bears the date of March 10, 1906. With an undivided back the postcard was manufactured before March 7, 1907 when the Postal Service first allowed a message along with the address. The colored, lithographed halftone postcard clearly uses the same photo negative, though less cropped around the edges. The postcards are the same size. The lithographed card was printed in Germany and apparently issued soon after the other card by The Metropolitan News Company of Boston, and bears a space for address and a smaller space printed, “In space below may be written sender’s name and address (no other writing).”
The postcards show the U.S. Post Office building with its second-floor bay window at the extreme left. The next building is the Vose and Thayer store, later the Rexall store, on the corner of School Street. Both buildings are gone as of 2011, the Lubec Memorial Library occupying the Post Office site, and the Thayer & Vose building abandoned and razed into a vacant lot in April, 2011.
The next building appears to bear the name of the C.H. Clark department store. Then comes the Calkins Shoe shop. With a new facade the Calkins building became the Lubec Hardware store in 1976. Beyond this building and the tree is a vacant lot which became the site of the Lubec Trust & Banking Co. building in 1908. All these buildings exist as of 2011. Beyond, across Main Street, is the multi-story Higgins building, which no longer stands.
Note the telephone lines on the left side of Water Street, and the electric power lines on the right side with the early street light lamp bulb.
