Description
George W. West, a native of Lowell, Massachusetts, enlisted in the 5th Massachusetts Infantry, then resigned to become a captain in the 10th Maine Infantry in October 1861.
He was commissioned into Co. S of the 17th Maine in July 1862 as a full major. He was promoted to colonel in October 1863 and commanded the 17th Maine until 1865.
West (1832-1899) was promoted to brigadier general for bravery at the battle of Antietam.
