Description
Henry L. Bartels, a native of Belmont, worked as a house painter in Portland when he enlisted in Co. F of the Maine 17th Regiment on August 4, 1862.
Bartels, 22, enlisted as a sergeant major. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant in May 1863 and the 1st lieutenant in April 1864.
He was wounded at the Wilderness on May 6, 1864 and was discharged as disabled on October 2, 1864.
