Description
Moses Gerrish Farmer, his wife Hannah Tobey Shapleigh Farmer and their daughter, Sarah Jane Farmer built this home in Eliot, Maine in the early 1880s. Originally from Eliot, Moses was serving as a professor of electrical science and a consultant to the U.S. Navy in Rhode Island. He and his daughter were in poor health and the family decided to return to Eliot, Maine. They named this home 'Bittersweet-in-the-Fields' because they felt 'bitter' to leave their Rhode Island life behind, but 'sweet' to be living in such a tranquil spot. Sarah went on to found the Green Acre Baha'i School in Eliot.
