Description
General Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909), a native of Leeds, commanded the 3rd Maine Infantry and the U.S. Volunteers General Staff Infantry during the Civil War. He won the Medal of Honor.
Howard is also known for his work as director of the Freedman's Bureau and the founder of Howard University in Washington, D.C., which offered education to formerly enslaved people.
At his funeral in Burlington, Vermont, on Oct. 29, 1909, Howard's casket was escorted by the 10th U.S. Regiment Cavalry.
Behind the caisson is the funeral charger, with stirrups reversed.
