Description
Soldiers from the 10th U.S. Cavalry, a segregated Black regiment, removed the casket of General. Oliver Otis Howard at First Congregational Church in Burlington, Vermont on October 29, 1899.
Howard, a native of Leeds, was a career Army officer. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 and West Point in 1854. He commanded troops during the Civil War, including the 3rd Maine Infantry.
After the war he was appointed commissioner of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, a post he held from 1865 to 1873.
He also founded Howard University in Washington, D.C., which provided higher education to freed slaves.
