Description
Looking north-northeast from the belfry of the Congregational Church allows a fine view of the American Can Company complex which fronts Commercial Street, below the bluff and hence not visible. The three story structure to the left, extending out over the water, became the main building of American Can after its construction about 1914. The older buildings to the right, the first from 1907, were then used for warehousing and other purposes. At its peak American Can manufactured 350 million cans a year with up to 250 employees. About half of Pope’s Folly island is visible on he right border.
This is #6 in a series of twelve photos.
