Description
Looking east-southeast from the belfry of the Congregational Church shows foreground residences along School Street and background commercial and waterfront buildings.
The prominent foreground house, fronting School Street, was for several decades at the end of the 20th century owned by Lois and Ryerson Johnson, editors of the book, “1776-1976 200 Years of Lubec History.” The next house down School Street, square with dormers on all four sides of the roof. was owned for the last decades of the 20th century and into the 21st century by Ursula (Godfrey) Danforth (July 21, 1898 - June 9, 2004) and her predeceased husband Dr. Earl Danforth. Ursula, a native of South Lubec, graduated from Columbia Law School and entered governmental service in Washington, D.C. Ultimately she was Chief Investigator for the Civil Service Administration. Just beyond the Danforth house appears the Methodist church. These buildings remain as of 2011.
Fronting Water Street, just left of the center of this photograph, appears the elaborately scalloped facade of the Peacock Canning Company. To the left the Ray Batson restaurant, also known as the Anchorage and Mulholland’s. To its left, the Lubec House apartments. Of these three, only the Peacock factory remains in 2011.
