Overview of Hilltop School and Columbian Hall, Lubec, ca. 1950

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

This view looks almost due south from the belfry of the Congregational Church. Hilltop School serving through Grade 8 appears in the foreground, with the municipal Columbian Hall to the right. The Columbian Hall was demolished in 1979 leaving a parking lot. The same year a new firehouse was built on the site of Hilltop School, later to include Lubec Town Hall. Sacred Heart Catholic Church, seen between and behind those buildings, is still active as of 2011.

A short stretch of Church Street is visible at the lower left.

This image assists dating this photograph (and others of this series), for there is no evidence of the new elementary school which was built in the distance in 1956.

This is #12 in a series of twelve photos.
