Description
Wilson G. Smille, M.D. writes to the State Commissioner of Education a letter describing the construction of a "fine" new public school and the erection of a new flagpole given in memory of Clifford Coggins. Mr. Coggins was a highly respected and beloved resident of the Newbury Neck and had passed away the previous winter.
In addition to the new flagpole the school was also given a handsome flag and a "simple decoration was placed on the top of the pole consisting of a weathervane showing the points of the compass and surmounted by a two masted schooner." Mr. Coggins' name is directly beneath the schooner.
Dr. Smillie informed the Commissioner of Education that one of Surry's citizens had protested the placement of the weathervane atop the flagpole and requested that he consider this matter.
