Description
Opponents of nuclear power gathered at the State House Hall of Flags in Augusta on May 25, 1979 to protest the reopening of Maine Yankee nuclear power plant in Wiscasset.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission ordered the plant closed, along with four others in the U.S., after the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident on March 28, 1979, in which one of the reactors sustained a core meltdown. The plants ordered closed were built from the same design.
The Maine protestors sought a meeting with Gov. Joseph E. Brennan to express their concerns about the plant reopening. Their protests led to a referendum vote on nuclear power held in September 1980.
