Description
Rev. Monsignor Arthur Decary (brother of Rev. father Zenon Decary) born on Oct. 12 1872 at St. Laurent near Montreal Province of Quebec. He attended the college of Montreal, from where he graduated in 1894 with a degree of Bachelor of Arts. He pursued a Theological course at the Grand Seminary of Montreal. He was ordained in the priesthood in that city in 1899.
He was assiged pastor of the Brunswick church, later transferred to Augusta in 1904 and later named pastor of St. Louis church at Fort Kent in 1919. He then was called to St. Andre church in Biddeford to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Father Louis Bergeron in 1919.
During 31 years that Monsignor Decary filled the office he dessiged and assisted in doing manual labor in the construction of St. Andre Parochial School. In 1930, he planned the enlargement of Presentation of Mary congregation convent on Sullivan St. He also called on a group of Sacred Heart Brothers of Victoriaville, Quebec in coming to teach at St. Andre School for boys.
He was instrumental through a large donation in the building of St. Louis High School. The erection of the Stella Maris School at Biddeford Pool, for the presentation of Mary sisterhood and the founding of Boy's high school on Pool road (later ) St. Francis College, ( Now University of New England ) St. Andre's Home, and Notre-Dame Hospital, on Pool road. Rev. Decary was honored by the French Government for his work with French speaking people of Maine and he was awarded the Legion of Merit.
He was fatally injured when struck by an automobile near his home in St. Laurent on Christmas Eve in 1957.
