POW John Sheahan to Lizzie Shriver, 1864

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Writing from Richland Prison (Camp Sorgum) in Columbia, South Carolina, 1st Lt. John P. Sheahan of the 31st Maine Infantry asked his fiance, Lizzie Shriver of Westminster, Maryland, to send him some Confederate money.

He told her she could get it at a store in Westminster where Confederates had been earlier in the war -- but to make sure it was dated 1864.

He was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Crater near Petersburg, Virginia, at the end of July 1864.
