Eben Calderwood to wife, from Baton Rouge, 1863

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Pvt. Eben Calderwood of Co. H, Maine 21st Infantry Regiment, wrote from Camp Banks in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to his wife, Mary, in Vinalhaven.

In response to a letter from her, Calderwood advised that she could hire someone to cut wood if she chose to. He also reported that he had sent money to her by express and that she should not say anything about it.

Calderwood wrote that he was not sure when there might be a battle, but noted that he would "fase the music with the rest if we do fight here but hope to be one of the lucky ones. I think I shall see you again."
