Description
Dr. Alonzo Garcelon of Lewiston received a reply to an inquiry he wrote to the U.S. surgeon general asking what his duties would be once Maine regiments were in the field. Garcelon, as surgeon in chief in Maine, was responsible for setting up a regimental hospital in Portland and supplying regimental surgeons.
The letter notes that surgeons and their assistants would report to the military officers in charge, not back to the state and that Garcelon's duties would be limited to preparing troops for departure and to the hospital he organized.
Garcelon had served in the Maine House and Maine Senate before the Civil War and was elected to a single one-year term as Governor in 1879.
