Description
Dr. William Wood of Portland wrote to Dr. Henry Hill that he thought Dr. Pearl Martin of Lewiston was unsuited to be named an assistant surgeon for a Maine regiment serving in the Civil War.
Wood wrote that he was "very much disappointed" when he examined Martin. He also reviewed notes from Martin's earlier examination in Augusta that confirmed his view.
Wood described Martin's "apparent & I fear real stupidity."
Wood and Hill were two of the three members named to a State Examination Board to evaluate recommendations and administer applications for surgeons who wanted to be commissioned to serve with volunteer regiments from Maine.
