Description
In February 1862, Dr. Samuel B. Hunter, surgeon of the 7th Maine Infantry, wrote to Maine Surgeon General Alonzo Garcelon of Lewiston about conditions at Camp Griffin near Washington, D.C., in northern Virginia.
Hunter noted that Dr. Frye, acting as steward, was not doing his duty. He was selling medicines and bandages and charging for prescriptions. Hunter also noted that Frye was "accustomed to drink."
He reported cases of typhoid and some measles. He was worried about "camp fever" and moving the tents to a new location to avoid it. He wrote, "I mean to have the best camp hospital in this Div."
Hunter, of East Machias, enlisted in Co. S of the 7th Infantry on November 29, 1861. He served until February 10, 1863.
