Description
Charles A. Garcelon, 2nd lieutenant in Co. I of the 16th Maine Infantry, wrote to his aunt Jane Waldron from Ridgeville, Maryland, reporting that he felt "strong to resist all temptations" of "vices" that abounded in camp. "I am confident that a man can live a Christian life in camp."
He also commented that he expected to lose an arm or leg and that believed that his father, Dr. Alonzo Garcelon, Maine's surgeon general during the war, would be nearby to "dress our wounds." His father spent some time at the front, although most of his duties were in Maine.
Aunt Jane's husband, Capt. William H. Waldron, was the commander of Co. I.
