Description

A Tichnor Brothers postcard of Bangor along the Penobscot River.

Bangor is about 30 miles from Penobscot Bay up the Penobscot River at its confluence with the Kenduskeag Stream. It is connected by bridge to the neighboring city of Brewer. Due to its location, during the 19th century Bangor prospered as the hub of the lumber industry in its area.

The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938 as part of their Maine series. These, and other postcards, by the Tichnor Brothers Company are officially known as the Tichnor Gloss Series because the photographs were notoriously retouched on such a level that does not allow the postcards to be classified as photographs or paintings. The caption reads, "View of Penobscot River from State Highway, entering Bangor, Maine."
