Description
Fort Popham was built in 1861 for use during the Civil War, but the structure was never completed. Located strategically at the mouth of the Kennebec River, the fort was conceived to protect the shipyards in Bath and the state capital in Augusta.
The State of Maine purchased Fort Popham in 1924, and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in October of 1969.
