William Maker GAR application, Gardiner, 1874

Description

William Maker, 35, applied for membership in the Heath Post No. 6, Gardiner, Grand Army of the Republic, on March 26, 1874. Maker served from June 4, 1861 to June 28, 1864 in Co. I of the 3rd Maine Infantry Volunteers.

The Grand Army of the Republic was created to help Civil War veterans with pensions and other issues. It also served as a social organization, holding yearly reunions and other events.

Enlisted as a private, Maker mustered out as a corporal when his three-year contract expired. According to the form, Maker was wounded in the throat at Gettysburg in July 1863.

Maker's application is endorsed by E.A. Chadwick. The application was approved, and is signed by committee members A.B. Andrew and J.A. Glazier and Adjutant E.P. Harmon.
