Description
Charles Bridges wrote to Lieutenant Colonel Richard B. Irwin, assistant adjutant general, to tender his resignation as 1st Lieutenant of H Company, 8th Infantry Corps d'Afrique. Bridges blames his resignation on ill health, and mentions an attached surgeon's certificate.
Bridges had submitted a similar resignation several weeks earlier.
As indicated on the reverse, the resignation letter was forwarded and approved by his commanding officers but ultimately rejected by the Medical Director's Office.
The 8th Corps d'Afrique was formerly known as the 3rd United States Volunteers, Ullmann's Brigade, and later as the 80th United States Colored Troops.
