Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Outgoing quartermaster J.H. Halsted of the 8th Infantry Corps d'Afrique transferred his stores to Charles Bridges, a native of Castine, who was to assume the quartermaster position.

Bridges, a 1st Lieutenant, had previously commanded Co. H of the regiment but had been suffering ill health. A month after his attempt to resign due to ill health was rejected, Bridges was named quartermaster.

Before receiving a commission in the 8th Infantry, Bridges served almost two years in Co. B of the 2nd Maine Infantry Regiment.
