Description

E.G. Manning, acting commissary of subsistence, wrote to Charles Bridges, a Castine native who was regimental quartermaster of the 8th Infantry Corps d'Afrique, advising him on procuring "soft bread" and "fresh beef."

Soft bread was usually only available to soldiers in camp; on the march they relied on hard bread, known widely as "hardtack."

Bridges enlisted in the 2nd Maine Infantry Regiment as a corporal on May 28, 1861. he was promoted to 1st sergeant on July 15, 1862. He received a commission as 1st lieutenant in the Corps d'Afrique on March 9, 1863. He was promoted to captain on Feb. 10, 1865, the same date he was mustered out.
