Description
François Savoie wrote to Major W.A. Hatch, commander of Bonnet Carre camp, petitioning for the Union army to pay rent for his land that they had seized and that became part of Bonnet Carre camp.
Savoie emphasized he was "a loyal citizen of the United States," and that he had been "one of the first who took the oath of allegiance in Louisiana."
The petition, and a related document were in the possession of Charles Bridges, a Castine native, who was quartermaster of the 8th Infantry Corps d'Afrique. The regiment was sometimes stationed at Bonnet Carre.
