Description
Lt. Charles Bridges , quartermaster of the 8th Infantry Corps d'Afrique, was granted a leave of 20 days based on a surgeon's certificate. Major General Nathaniel T. Banks, commanding the Department of the Gulf, recommended the extension of leave by another 20 days.
Bridges, a native of Castine who had served with the 8th Infantry since March 9, 1863, had suffered ill health during the summer months, and had tendered his resignation along with a surgeon's certificate. The resignation was refused.
The leave may relate to the previous illness or an ongoing affliction.
The document includes a variety of handwritten notes, as well as the names of officers in the command structure. A stamp on the front shows that Bridges "reported for transport" in New York on April 4, presumably to return to the Gulf.
