Description
Lt. Charles Bridges, a Castine native, was the quartermaster for the 80th United States Colored Troops. He wrote to Richard B. Irwin, assistant adjutant general in the Department of the Gulf, to request that his friend John C. Phinney of Stockton be transferred into Bridges' regiment.
At the time, the 80th had vacancies for commissary and quartermaster sergeants.
The request was forwarded with an additional endorsement by Lt. Col. William S. Mudgett, a native of Stockton who knew Phinney, and was approved and forwarded by Cyrus Hamlin of Hampden, the colonel commanding the 80th.
Writing on the reverse indicates that the request was rejected by Mjr. Gen. Nathaniel T. Banks, commander of the Department of the Gulf, after the request was referred to the commanding officer of the 2nd Maine Cavalry, the unit in which Phinney was serving.
