Description
John C. Phinney, of Stockton, wrote to his friend, Lt. Charles Bridges, a Castine native serving as Regimental Quartermaster for the 80th United States Colored Troops.
Bridges and Lt. Col. William S. Mudgett of Stockton, also in the 80th, had worked to get Phinney transferred to their regiment, but the effort was refused by Phinney's commanding officer, Colonel C.W. Woodman, as Phinney described in his letter.
At the end of the letter, Phinney wrote "tell Col Mudgett that I am well & dam the commission if I could only spend one more knight at the Bangor House with him."
The author's location is not clear, but it is most likely somewhere in southern Louisiana.
