Description
François Savoie granted power of attorney to Leo Elfer to collect any payment from the United States government relating to properties Savoie owned but that the Union army occupied.
In January 1864, François Savoie had written to Major W.A. Hatch, commander of Bonnet Carre camp, petitioning for the Union Army to pay rent for landholdings of his that they had seized and that became part of Bonnet Carre camp.
This document and the earlier petition were in the possession of Lt. Charles Bridges, a Castine native who was quartermaster of the 8th Infantry Corps d'Afrique, later 80th United States Colored Troops. The regiment was sometimes stationed at Bonnet Carre.
