Description
Lt. Charles Bridges, a Castine native who was quartermaster of the 80th United States Colored Troops, hired "contrabands" as camp laborers for Bonnet Carre Camp. Contrabands were escaped slaves who sought protection from Union forces.
The men listed here were hired as teamsters, stablemen, carpenters, blacksmiths, and wood choppers. They were paid $8 or $10 per month depending on their position.
