Description
This photo is taken from the Winslow side of the Kennebec River or from the bridge crossing the river and is looking southwest. The dam structures, associated with the power-generation building on the left, are completely submerged during the 1936 flood.
The Lockwood Company was one of the first major manufacturing industries to build in the Waterville area along the Kennebec River in the late 1870s. Needing many workers the company purchased much land in Waterville and Winslow, and built tenement houses close to the mill so that workers could walk to work.
The Lockwood Cotton Mills shut its doors in the mid 1960s when workers went out on strike.
