Description
Charles Bridges was 23 when he enlisted in Co. B of the 2nd Maine Infantry on May 28, 1861, only a month after the Civil War began.
Bridges, of Castine, was a corporal when he enlisted, and was promoted to sergeant in September 1861, then to 1st sergeant in July 1862.
He mustered out of the 2nd Maine in February 1863 in order to be commissioned as a 1st lieutenant in Co. S of the 80th Infantry, U.S. Colored Troops.
He was promoted to full captain in February 1865 when he was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Quartermaster Department Infantry Regiment.
