Contributed by United Society of Shakers
Description
Only 30 miles from Sabbathday Lake, Portland was an important urban center to the Shakers. As early as the 1790s bolts of linen cloth woven by the Sisters were sold in the city. Later Portland became an important market for Shaker herbs.
Fancy goods such as jewelry and sewing boxes, candy, pen wipes, potholders, stuffed toys and dolls were sold in several of the city's hotels and gift shops into the 1950s.
A frequent trading partner of the community was the Edward D. Pettengill Company, distributors of Shaker Pickles, Horse Radish and Ketchup. In addition, many of the supplies the community required were purchased in Portland.
