Description
This cottage on Little Chebeague Island was built about 1903 for Joseph B. Reed of Portland, one of the founders of the Waldo Company and owner of the Waldo Hotel on the island during the late 19th century. The design is attributed to Portland architect Antoine Dorticos.
The cottage was used by the Navy, which had a large presence in Casco Bay during World War II, from about 1943-1946 as headquarters for the Fleet Recreation Center on the island. In 2010 only ruins remained.
A post-war appraisal described the cottage as "Bldg. No. 1 Recreation Bldg; 2 1/2 stories, 16,374 cu. ft., with wooden frame, masonry post, shingle side wall and roof, plastered."
