Navy Lecture Hall, Little Chebeague Island, 1947

Contributed by National Archives at Boston

Description

The Navy firefighter school lecture hall on Little Chebeague Island was located near the firefighter training structure. An August 1945 Navy newsletter stated that 15,000 men had been trained at this school during its two years of operation.

The Navy's Atlantic Fleet destroyers and escort vessels trained in Casco Bay during World War II and the Navy had facilities on several islands. Little Chebeague was mostly a recreation center for sailors.

An appraisal report written at the end of World War II describes it as "1 story, 674 sq. ft., with wooden frame, concrete posts, novelty siding, comp. roof, Wall Board."
