Description
Much of the Navy's Atlantic Fleet was based in Casco Bay during World War II. The Navy occupied Little Chebeague Island primarily to provide recreational facilities for sailors.
The Navy also operated a shipboard firefighters school on the island. Sailors learned to douse fires in a simulated machinery compartment.
This photograph shows a multiple outhouse, turned on its side, that was located near the firefighter training structure. It was labeled as "Building 19."
