Navy firefighting school, Newport, R.I., ca. 1943

Contributed by National Archives at Boston

Description

Groups of sailors are practicing extinguishing fires at the Firefighting School at the Naval Training Station in Newport, Rhode Island during World War II. The structures with fires burning inside simulated a ship's compartments.

A similar firefighting training structure was built on Little Chebeague Island in Casco Bay where thousands of sailors learned to fight shipboard fires.
