Description
An image of the Battle of Port Hudson, Louisiana was created by J.O. Davidson. It resides in the collections of Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.
The facsimile print was created about 1887.
The 48-day siege of Port Hudson by Union Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks lasted from May 22 to July 9, 1863. Ulysses S. Grant attacked Vicksburg at the same time and after his victory there, Port Hudson surrendered, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River.
