Description

The teacher in the photograph is Mrs. Rena Bonsey wife of Claude L. Bonsey. Her teaching career began at the Sugar Hill School in Eastbrook at the young age of seventeen. She began teaching full-time in Surry around the mid 1940s with brief stops in Brooksville and Lamoine.

The Surry Village School eventually closed and the Surry Elementary School was built and dedicated in 1952. After the death of her husband the Surry Elementary School was renamed the Claude L. Bonsey School.
