Description
Forest Paper Co.'s production of soda pulp for paper making left a byproduct known as black ash, a substance that began as black liquor created from dissolved wood components that was then evaporated into a molasses like consistency. After it was burned at a high temperature in a rotary furnace, the molasses charred up and turned to black ash.
At the turn of the century, Forest Paper Company acquired Shaw's Grove and deposited much of the ash there. In some spots, like this one, the black ash was over 20 feet deep.
