Description
A photograph taken in an unknown location shows black troops in camp during the Civil War. While slaves had long followed the Union Army, gone to them for protection, and aided with duties at Union camps, it was not until after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 that black units were formed.
The image, from the Library of Congress, is half of a stereograph.
