Description
Camp Tekakwitha in Leeds was founded in 1938 by the Dominican fathers of SS Peter and Paul parish in Lewiston.
It was intended originally to cater to local French-speaking boys. However, by 1949, the majority of its campers were Quebecois.
The camp was run for 40 years by Rev. Remi Clark with Rev. Gaston Lapointe as his assistant for 30 of those. After Father Clark's retirement in 1978, the camp was turned over to a private board of directors.
It was, and remains, the only Francophone camp in the United States.
